Empires of the Steppes: A History of the Nomadic Tribes Who Shaped Civilization
Empires of the Steppes provides a readable narrative of 45 centuries about the nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppes who interacted with the civilizations of Europe, the Middle East, India, and China. The story is told from the nomads’ perspective. It begins with the domestication of the horse and creation of the nomadic way of life on the southern Russian steppes. The narrative discusses the successive nomadic empires down to Tamerlane (1370-1405), the last conqueror to depend on the nomadic horse archers.
Anthony has synthesized a vast literature on historical linguistics and archaeology to explain the origins of the first steppe nomads on the South Russian steppes in the fourth millennium B.C.
In my opinion, Anthony does an outstanding job of explaining the origins and distribution of the speakers of Indo-European languages whose migrations have defined the linguistic map from Ireland to India. Subsequent DNA analysis of the populations of Yamnaya steppe culture has confirmed his thesis based on linguistic evidence and archaeology.
I recommend this book as the fundamental work for any study of the early Indo-European-speaking nomads.

I am impressed how Barefield perceptively analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of successive nomadic confederations from the Xiongnu down to the Mongols.
He argues convincingly, in my opinion, that often the Chinese Empire and the nomadic confederation often depended upon each other economically and militarily as is well seen in the alliance between later Tang emperors and the Uyghur Khans in the eighth and early ninth centuries.
